Following a period of great success and growth, UNIAID wishes to expand and strengthen its Board. We aim to recruit new student Trustees in the first half of 2006.
We start 2006 with a Board of six Trustees. The Board is chaired by Professor Deian Hopkin, Vice Chancellor and CEO of London South Bank University. We would be particularly interested to hear from candidates who can help UNIAID address our current lack of diversity on the Board.
As a student Trustee, you will gain networking skills and valuable experience of working within a charity and small business at board level. You will be at the heart of decision-making and have the opportunity to have a say in all the aspects of the organisation's work.
The Students' Charity, UNIAID, has a vision of a world without practical or financial barriers to Higher Education. Our mission is to give students practical support to help them cope with these barriers against a background of steadily increasing student debt. This is achieved via online financial simulations and accommodation bursaries.
The strategic aims which the Board have set are:
During 2005 UNIAID's Student Survivor, our first online campaign, was seen by over a million people and was Highly Commended in the Third Sector Awards. All About U was launched by Bill Rammell, Minister for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, and is now in use throughout the country. The numbers of UNIAID accommodation bursaries more than doubled.
Financial support has mostly been from private sector philanthropy led by the student accommodation provider, UNITE, HSBC Bank plc and a major donor. UNIAID's important work was recently recognised by a government grant to develop outreach and workshop materials for use in schools and colleges everywhere. Projected turnover for 2006 is just under £500,000.
The following priorities have been set for 2006:
UNIAID has developed an inspiring culture. Working in a spirit of partnership our outlook is youthful, energetic, open-minded and consultative. UNIAID is independent of government and the higher education sector and our focus is always upon the needs of students (who are involved in everything we do).
Defining Characteristics:
Tenure is for an initial three year period with the opportunity to stand for a second period. There is no remuneration, although UNIAID will reimburse transport costs to meetings.
Six meetings are held per year in Central London mostly in the late afternoon (except for the Trustees dinner which is held in the evening). Trustees are additionally expected to volunteer for one of the Sub Committee which oversee the more detailed work of the organisation. There are currently three:
