The road to uniSeptember is now upon us – so if you’re heading off to uni, here are some tips for making the most of your first few weeks. PackingTake some things to personalize your room. Remember, you’ll be sleeping and studying there, so you need to make it feel like home. Making your room comfy will also help if you feel homesick. SocialisingTalk to as many people as you can – not just the people you live with. Remember not to blow all of your cash in the first few weeks; there are lots of things you can do for free such as exploring the area. FreshersVisit the freshers fair/society day; who knows what you’ll find! Most societies and sports teams charge for membership. This fee might be just a few pounds, or it could be a lot higher for some sports teams – so be sure you’ll make the most of it before you hand over your cash. CarsIf you’re planning on taking a car with you, check whether you’ll need a permit, how much it costs and if there’s anywhere for you to park. FoodCupboard space in kitchens is limited, so don’t take too much with you. Remember to take basics such as bread and milk for the first few days before you find the local supermarket. Keep an eye out for money-saving deals and coupons. |

Staying safeOne in three students is a victim of crime. Don’t become another statistic. Some tips… Don’t prop open entrance doors or leave your windows open when you’re not in your room. If your phone gets stolen, call 08701 123 123 to get your phoned locked. Mark your belongings with a UV pen, so your property is easier to identify if it gets stolen. GET INSURED! Check to see if you’re covered as part of your banks student service or on your parents’ insurance policy.
Your personal safety is also important. Don’t walk home alone – instead, go home with friends or get a taxi. If you’re on a night out, keep an eye on your drink, or, even better, get a Spikey or another anti drink-spiking item to keep yourself safe. |

Money, money, moneyWith the new academic year about to start, do you know what you’re going to do with your money and whether you’ll have enough? If you think you’ll need a job, start thinking about what you’d like to do now. Jobs at uni range from shop, bar and catering work to crewing for the entertainments department; from stewarding for the security department in your students’ union to working as a student ambassador. Your university or students’ union will probably have a job shop, so pop along when you get to uni and find out what’s available. To find out if you’ll have the time to work and study, use the UNIAID Student Calculator. |

Eat your way out of debtAn article in the Times caught our eye this month; Lup Fan Yau was awarded the title of the Biggest Breakfast Eater in Britain after he managed to consume 5 breakfasts in 12 minutes and 35 seconds. The prizes for this slightly bizarre contest are certainly lucrative, with a first prize of £500 and second prize of £250! UNIAID, of course, does not endorse this as a way to pay off debts! |
